I asked God three questions: What are You doing in Your people? What are You doing through me? And what are You going to do in that room? This is what He said. Read it slow. Read it out loud if you can. This is not an announcement — it’s a preparation.
Two voices · one house
Before this Encounter, we sat down and asked God three things: What are You doing in Your people? What are You doing through me? And what are You going to do in that room?
Then we each answered them separately — without reading the other’s. Hunter’s answers are in gold. Quella’s answers are in purple.
It’s a lot to read at once, so use the buttons to pick a voice. Read both. God said different things to each of us, and you’ll need both halves to see what He’s doing. Take it in two sittings if you need to — you’ve got days.
Before we count these days down, we start where He always starts — with an honest heart.
As we prepare for this Encounter, the Bible tells us to examine ourselves. And I want us to do that honestly. Not religiously. Honestly. Be transparent with yourself. Be real with yourself.
So the prayer we start with is not “God, bless me.” It’s “God, search me.”
Search my heart. Because who can know it? The heart is deceitful. The heart is desperately wicked. So Lord — search my heart. And then do the second thing. Give me a clean heart.
This is so important for us. Because when we let God search us, we get to be real with Him about exactly where we are. Not where we posted. Not where we testified. Where we actually are. And from that place — that honest place — we can walk.
Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.
Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.
The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?
Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
He does not search you to shame you. He searches you to cleanse you.
Let’s be honest about how a lot of us got here.
Some of us got saved at an early age. Some of us got saved because of our mom. Our dad. Our grandmother. We grew up in the church — it was a custom. It was the norm. It was just what we were a part of.
So even if we didn’t understand it — even if we didn’t feel it — even if we didn’t really want to do it — some of us just walked up and got saved.
And I want to say this carefully, because people carry shame about it: that is biblical. That is a real thing God does. Paul told Timothy that the genuine faith in him lived first in his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice — and Paul didn’t call that fake. He called it genuine. He reminded Timothy that he had known the Scriptures from childhood.
So the misconception — “my parents made me,” “I just heard about it,” “I was in church so it just made sense even though I didn’t really get it” — that is not disqualifying. You heard a witness. And faith comes by hearing. God used that voice. That was not an accident and it was not a technicality. God had His hand on that.
when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.
But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Here is the turn.
The Lord does not desire for us to stay feeding off somebody else’s witness. Not our mom’s. Not our dad’s. Not our grandparents’. Not the preacher we grew up under. God did not intend for us to live our whole walk off of a secondhand report.
Look at John 4. The woman at the well met Jesus and ran back into the city, and the whole town believed because of what she said. Her witness was real. Her witness worked. People got saved off her mouth.
But watch what happened next. They went and heard Him for themselves. And then they came back and told her something that should shake every one of us:
Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.”
Now we believe. Not because of what you said. We ourselves have heard Him.
That is the whole thing right there. That is what August 10 is about.
So I have faith. I do think this thing is true. I grew up in it, so I understand it. I’ve seen the energy. I’ve seen the antics. I’ve seen the entertainment. But Lord, I know there is something realer. I know there is a face-to-face out there for me. I don’t want to keep living off the woman’s report.
I want to hear You for myself. I want to experience You for myself. I want to have an encounter with You for myself. Lord — make this thing real.
And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.”
I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, But now my eye sees You.
A borrowed witness can bring you in the door. It cannot carry you through the fire.
If we were really real in our hearts — some of us are still running on our grandparents’ faith. Some of us are still running on our mother’s faith. We are still living off the woman’s report and we have not truly experienced Christ for ourselves.
And in that gap — yes, our salvation is sealed. The Spirit Himself is the guarantee. That is settled and nobody is taking it from you.
But the same Bible says work out your own salvation. Not work for it. Work it out. Because it is God who works in you both to will and to do.
Meaning: we already have the desire to know Jesus. We already have the unction, the thought, the pull — “you know what, I do believe. I think this thing is real.” That is Him working in you already.
But the distractions of the world keep us from working it out. And once we start to work it out, we start to understand the true God. We start to understand the living Father. So we work it out — until we are no longer feeding off somebody else’s witness. Now I am the witness.
In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
Hear me — this is not works to earn salvation. This is not works to earn God’s love. This is spiritual discipline, so that I can see, I can hear, and I can understand that Jesus is with me and that He loves me. It is the discipline that transforms my identity until I know I can have a face-to-face with the Lord.
So let’s pray it plain. Lord, search me. Give me a clean heart. I have this heart — who can know it?
And then let’s be real enough to say it out loud:
Because when I come to church on Sunday, I get a jolt of energy from the entertainment. When I go to Bible study, that’s the one time I truly study. But throughout the rest of the days, Lord — sometimes I’m having a hard time finding out where You are.
And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
Jesus told His disciples — and He told us — “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
But see, we always want to focus on what the Lord is making us. We want to focus on what the Lord needs to do with us. What He’s doing in us. Answering our prayers. Transforming us. Our calling. Our gifting. Our talents. What job. Being a father. Being a mother.
We are handing ourselves an identity and then asking the Lord to help us with an identity we built without following Him.
Read the order again. Follow Me — then I will make you. Follow Me — then I will make you.
So the question has to be asked, and it has to be asked honestly: are we truly following Jesus? Daily. Twenty-four seven. Not because we need to work for His love — but so we can truly experience His love in its fullness.
Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
And the only way to follow Him is to give up everything and to deny yourself.
There are some things right now that we have not denied. And since we didn’t deny it, there is no way we can give our whole self. There is no way we can fully follow Him while we’re still following other things.
Because the distractions are real. Social media. Our phone. Our kids. Our job. Our school. Our peers. Our family. Ourselves.
And when we’re walking down this narrow path, we skip over onto these other paths to follow. “Well, I got to take care of this. I got to take care of that.” So we end up following different things — and then we get confused — and then when we finally get back on the narrow path we’re asking, “Lord, where are You?”
He never moved. We stepped off.
Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”
So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.
Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.
Somebody is going to say, “Well, how can you think about Jesus all the time?”
The same way we think about our kids all the time. The same way we think about our job. Our spouse. The money. The bills. The exact same way.
Do we think about Jesus in that same aspect? To the point where we deny ourselves — even in the pain, even in the confusion — and we raise up our hands and say:
Lord, come on now. You told me to follow You. Right now I’m following You — but right now I feel confused. Right now, Lord, I don’t even know if You’re there. Right now I don’t know what’s going on. Right now, Lord, I’ve got a dollar eighty in my account and I’ve got all these bills. I’ve got all these kids. Lord, I’ve been trying my best in school.
In the middle of those things — do we still follow Christ on that narrow path?
And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?
I can say this honestly: there are times we missed the encounter with the Lord because we were preoccupied encountering other things.
There are times we missed an encounter with Jesus because we don’t truly understand His love, and His power, and what He can do in us and through us.
So we count on other things. We go ahead and try to be God in our own situation.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
Clear it out. Clear everything out.
Not out of ignorance — not “Lord, I’m done, I’m not going to do anything.” No. It’s: “Lord, I am able and I am ready. Whatever You need me to do.”
I clear everything out — whatever You need me to do. Not “Lord, You do it for me.” But “Lord, whatever You need me to do.”
Because He is standing at the door. He is knocking. He does not kick it in. He waits to be let in — and there has to be room in the house when He comes.
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.
The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the LORD; Make straight in the desert A highway for our God.”
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Let me say the thing out loud.
I’m tired of struggling. I’m tired of getting these phony encounters and thinking that I’m encountering You — when I’m really just being entertained.
Entertained by the music. By the teacher. By the preacher. By the radio. By the events. By the little brunches and the Bible studies. Entertained — and not really encountering You for myself.
Lord, I heard the witness. And I have faith that yes, maybe there is this thing called Jesus.
But the Lord is also saying: I need you to encounter Me for yourself.
having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!
Therefore the Lord said: “Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men,”
Entertainment moves the emotions and leaves you the same. An encounter moves you and leaves you changed.
We are not gathering to put on a show. We are not gathering for a jolt of energy that wears off by Tuesday.
We are clearing a room, silencing the phones, opening the Word, and making space for the living God — so that a generation can stop living off somebody else’s report and say for themselves: “Now I believe — because I have heard Him.”
Moses spoke with God face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. That was not a metaphor and it was not a mood. That was a real man in a real tent with a real God.
And when Peter was sinking, Jesus didn’t preach a sermon at him. He stretched out His hand and caught him. That is the God we are making room for.
So the LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.
And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Come hungry. Come honest. Come prepared. Don’t just attend God — encounter Him.
God is calling the body of Christ out of deception and mediocrity.
I truly believe that God needs us to follow His teachings, to truly live a daily life of worship, and to build disciples by doing so.
God wants us to wrap our minds around the fact that the same power that rose Jesus on the third day dwells within us.
That’s big. So big, we don’t fully comprehend it.
So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you.
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
The power is not coming. The power is already living inside you.
This part is mine. It’s not a sermon illustration. It’s where I actually am.
I’ve been a believer for years. But over the last two, three years, I’ve been taking this walk more serious than I ever have.
Being a better husband. Being a better dad. Being a better businessman. Getting rid of my sins and my addiction. Going through rehab. Almost losing my marriage by my own hand. Going from financially stable to super broke.
Going through all of those things — believing in Jesus, but not really seeing it work through me.
And I know why. One, because I truly wasn’t following Him with everything in me. I wasn’t giving Him my whole life. I gave Him bits and pieces — the pieces that showed up on a Sunday. Or a Wednesday Bible study. Or a Tuesday night men’s Bible study. Or when I listened to a song.
It was conditional. It required me doing something outside of myself just to feel like I was spending time with the Lord.
I had a relationship with the schedule. I didn’t have a relationship with Him.
At the top of this year, I went into rehab for alcoholism. I spent forty-three days there.
And in that room, the Lord spoke to me. He healed me. He convicted me. He forgave me. He had mercy on me. He transformed me — in that time.
And it reminded me of something. It reminded me of when I was younger, when I first met the Lord for myself. I was in His Word, and I watched His Word come alive. It was a two-edged sword in my life — cutting down to the joints and the marrow, discerning the thoughts and the intents of my heart.
In that moment I saw the Lord alive in His Word, and I knew what I needed to do.
But hear me carefully, because this is the whole thing: that was God working in me. I never worked it out.
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
I sought the LORD, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears.
When you work something out, there is an action.
It’s like this. I have the desire to go to the gym because I know my body ain’t looking right. I have the desire to go to the gym and eat healthy because I know I don’t have any energy. I have the desire because I’ve been getting sick, and I know I’m getting older, and my body ain’t feeling like it used to — and I’ve done some damage to it.
So I feel it internally. All right. I need to do something.
And everybody has that. Everybody has the desire to do better and to walk closer to the Lord. People actually already know some of the things they need to give up. They already know some of the things they need to do. It’s internal. God puts that in you. That’s the power. That’s the grace. That’s the mercy. That’s everything He deposits in you to work out.
But then there is a part where you have to start working it out.
If I don’t meal prep — I’m not working out. If I don’t buy the ingredients — I’m not working out. If I don’t count the calories, if I don’t turn the label over and understand what I’m putting in my body — I’m not working out. If I don’t walk into the gym and actually pick up some weight — I’m not working out. I’m not taking a physical action to transform my body.
And it is the exact same thing with salvation. If I don’t take a physical action, my salvation doesn’t work itself out into this physical plane. It stays a desire.
That’s what hit me in rehab. I knew: I do have the desire to quit. But I will never quit unless I start working it out. If I don’t take things in stride, take action, put things in place — I will always have the desire internally, but outwardly I will still be an addict. I’ll still be whatever that label is.
Same with Christ. If I don’t take the desire a step further and start working out my salvation, I will always have the desire to be better, to follow Christ — but my life won’t transform.
…work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
So this is the space I’m in. Fully giving my entire life to the Lord — everything I do.
And He’s stripping away the business. I still have the ideas. I still have the skill. But He’s taking it out of my hands.
I still have the desire to do things for myself. I still have the desire for self-preservation. He’s stripping that away too.
I still have the desire to be in control of things. He’s stripping that away.
And here’s the one nobody expects — I have the calling to teach. The calling to do music. The calling to men’s ministry. Parenting ministry. All of these things in the Kingdom. And He’s stripping even those away.
Because God said: “Follow Me, then I will make you fishers of men.” He is more concerned with me following Him than with me producing for Him.
So that’s where I’m at. I’m at a place where I am more concerned about following the Lord and having a relationship with the Lord. That’s it. And whatever comes from that, comes from that.
Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ.
Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.
Of course that is easier said than done. Because I’m giving Him my finances. I’m giving Him how I raise my kids. I’m giving Him my marriage. I’m giving Him all of it.
And then when it doesn’t look like it should — I still have to keep it in His hands. Not snatch it back. Not play God.
Here’s what I’m learning, and it’s the hardest thing yet.
Even being transformed. Even being sober. Even preaching and knowing the Word. Just because I have the wisdom and the knowledge concerning the Spirit, I still have to yield.
Because I’m not at the place where I don’t know His Word. I’m at the place where I know it. I’m following Him to the best of my ability. And even knowing the spiritual things — even knowing the right thing to do, even ready to take action on the right thing — the Lord is still telling me: follow Me.
And I say, “But Lord, I know what to do. It’s biblically right. This is actually a great idea to solve this issue in my life.”
And the Lord says: “Yield to Me. Follow Me. Then I will make you.”
The Lord is not saying know My Word. He’s saying follow Me — and then I’ll tell you what to do. That is a difference. That is a whole difference.
Even having the answers, He’s saying: don’t run the answer. I’ll let you know when.
It’s like having a billion dollars and being able to solve a hundred-dollar problem — and God says, “Don’t spend that hundred dollars. Follow Me, and I’ll let you know what to do.”
Having the power to exercise — and waiting to work it out. That is exactly where I am.
You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.
Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?
Therefore David inquired of the LORD, and He said, “You shall not go up; circle around behind them, and come upon them in front of the mulberry trees. And it shall be, when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then you shall advance quickly. For then the LORD will go out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.”
David had already beaten these same Philistines the same way once. God told him to go around this time. The method that worked last time was not the method for this time. The victory was in the asking, not in the memory.
In me, God is calling me to go deeper in my understanding of myself and my relationship with Him.
For so long — unknowingly — my relationship with God was a reflection of a cumulative account of all of the different relationships I’ve had with the authority figures in my life. My mother. My father. My older sister. My grandparents. My teachers.
God is removing the scales from my eyes in these situations, but also revealing what I need to lay at His feet.
What this is doing for me is helping me reestablish authentic trust — within myself, and with the ultimate authority figure in my life, God.
I have to disassociate trust from being hurt, used, abused, or forgotten.
It’s a process.
If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
When my father and my mother forsake me, Then the LORD will take care of me.
Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized.
Can a woman forget her nursing child, And not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, Yet I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands.
Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, And whose hope is the LORD. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes.
casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.
He is not the sum of everyone who held authority over you. He is the One they were all a shadow of — and a poor one.
This is what I believe. And I’m saying it out loud before it happens.
I believe God is going to show up in a mighty way and individually meet people face to face like never before.
I truly believe this event will mark people. He will mark the babe and He will mark the mature — and He will take them to a level they have not been to.
And hear this: you don’t have to do a forty-three-day rehab to get it. You don’t have to go up on a mountain for forty days and disappear. Moses did. Elijah did. Jesus did. And God can absolutely still call a man into a wilderness.
But He is not bound to the length of your process. He will meet you. He will meet you. He will meet you in this room.
And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
Seek the LORD while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near.
The deepest things we’ve been ignoring. The things we’ve been petitioning and asking God about. The deepest things sitting in our hearts that keep us from fully walking with God in His fullness — twenty-four seven, all the time — meaning follow Him. Let go of the boats. Let go of the nets. And follow Me.
He is going to give those answers in this room — through worship, through prayer, through fasting. And we will have an encounter with Him we will never forget.
Because so many of us are carrying this: “Man, there’s something I know God wants to do through me. I just haven’t been able to put my finger on it.” And you can’t put your finger on it because you’re being pulled in ten directions. You can’t soak long enough. You’re all over the place.
I know God is real — I just haven’t been still long enough to get the depth of what He’s doing in me.
That new level of relationship. That new understanding. That face to face. That’s what I’m yearning for. And I don’t believe I’m the only one.
They immediately left their nets and followed Him.
So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.
Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!
The Lord touched me in a way where I have a boldness about my life now — because I saw the Lord for myself. I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and He answered. That is why I trust Him. Not because somebody told me He was faithful. Because He was faithful to me.
So here is what I believe God is going to do in that room. He’s going to give people a new level of trust. And He’s going to give people boldness.
Look at the ones who saw Him alive. The apostles watched Him after the resurrection over forty days, by many infallible proofs. Paul met Him on the Damascus road — last of all, as one born out of due time. Different encounters, different timelines, same result: ordinary men with a boldness the courts could not explain. And the rulers looked at them and realized these men had been with Jesus.
They got so bold that Paul could say, “I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die.” I will die for this message. That is what an encounter produces.
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.
to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.
Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time.
Then Paul answered, “What do you mean by weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”
That’s the boldness. That’s the trust. That is what I believe the Lord is going to give the people on August 10th.
So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
On August 10th, I’m expecting God to be God.
Not the limited God that we try to wrap our minds around — but the transcendent, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent God.
I’m expecting lives to be changed forever.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.”
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.
Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Lord, search my heart. I can’t know it on my own — but You can. Show me what’s in there. Create in me a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit in me.
Father, I confess I have been living off somebody else’s witness. I’ve been fed by my mother’s faith, my grandmother’s faith, my church’s faith — and I thank You for every one of them. But I want to hear You for myself.
Show me what I have not denied. Show me where I stepped off the narrow path. I clear the room. I am able and I am ready — whatever You need me to do.
